How to import your Letterboxd diary
Letterboxd lets you download your whole history from your account settings, as a ZIP with one CSV per thing: diary, ratings, reviews and watchlist. JoyHob cross-references all of them and rebuilds each film with its date, its rating and your text.
Where the download is
In Letterboxd: Settings → Data → Export your data. You get the ZIP straight away, no waiting for an email. Drop it into JoyHob as it is, no need to unzip.
Three steps
- Download your exportOpen the data settings in Letterboxd and request the export. You get a ZIP immediately.
- Check what is insideIf you want to look first, drop it on the JoyHob inspector: it lists the CSVs and the row count of each. No account, and the file never leaves your browser.
- Import itIn JoyHob, Import content, pick Letterboxd and drop the ZIP. You review every match before anything is saved.
What comes back
- Your diary, with the date you watched each film.
- Your ratings, mapped onto the JoyHob scale.
- Your reviews, which become the private note on each entry.
- Your watchlist, which lands in Bookmarks rather than your collection: wanting to watch it is not having watched it.
What does not come back, and why
- Films are matched by title and year. None of the Letterboxd CSVs carry a TMDB id — only the boxd.it address — so these depend on the name more than any other source. Anything that does not match confidently goes to the review screen instead of being saved blind.
- The
deleted/andorphaned/folders are ignored on purpose. Those are films you removed, or that Letterboxd pulled from its catalogue: importing them would hand back exactly what you deleted. - Your lists and likes are not imported. They live in their own files, not in the diary.
What JoyHob does not open in your ZIP
The import opens five files: diary, ratings, watched, reviews and watchlist. Your profile and your comments are never read. And if you use the inspector, the file is processed in your browser and never uploaded.
